Elements of a Story: Lord of the Rings

Setting: Medieval Middle Earth, a fictional place.
A familiar setting from stories and history, but in another plane so that anything can be explained as being unique to that place.
Characters: Bilbo’s party, and the buildup to the Fellowship.
Bilbo’s party introduces us to our main cast of the Hobbits, Frodo, Sam, Pippin and Merry. Showing us their personalities, for example Pippin and Merry stealing Gandalf’s fireworks. Alongside this it introduces Gandalf, being serious when he needs to be, like in retaliation to the theft, but having fun and setting off fireworks on the contrary. We are then introduced to the likes of Legolas, Aragorn, and Gimli separately, each showing their personality, like Aragorn’s knowledge of the Ring Wraiths, Gimli’s care and ferocity in the fight, and Legolas’ wisdom of exploring.

Plot: Destroy the Ring.
The ring is a threat to our hero, Frodo, and almost cos him his life, starting his heroes journey. He is reluctant at first, showing us that he doesn’t exactly fit into this tale and is a bit of a diamond in the rough at first.

Conflict: Sauron and his Armies.
This is the theme, and I will talk about it more there. But the main conflict is between the Heroes and Sauron, Sauron trying to steal the ring, and the Heroes trying to destroy it.

Resolution: The Fellowship fight for the ring’s destruction.
Through betrayals, losses, gains etc, the Fellowship fight with the plot in mind and the ring is thrown into the fires of Mount Doom, being destroyed, and Sauron defeated. Along the way the characters are developed to keep it interesting, and action sequences highlight the movies.

Point of View: Diverse
The Story is told through many angles, the movie opens with the voice of Galadriel narrating, showing her importance to the overall LOTR story, being a third person point of view. On the other hand, the story is also told through the eyes of Frodo and the Book him and his uncle Bilbo have written about their adventures, being a first person view. The POV of the story is not important in the LOTR, it is entirely Frodo’s journey in saving the world.

Theme: The Battle.
The Theme of The Lord of the Rings is based around the conflict between the Fellowship and Innocent Populace vs Sauron and his Uruk’hai army. But there is also conflict between the Heroes and the Ring, mentally and physically, as well as the conflict between Frodo, Sam and Gollum and how they fight mentally over who is right and wrong, and between Gollum’s split personality.
